This theatrical event is produced by the La Jolla Theatre Ensemble and Common Ground Theatre, sharing the works of African-American poets Amanda Gorman, Langston Hughes, and Maya Angelou, performed by Yolanda Franklin and Ernie McCray, and featuring the Music of the Rob Thorsen Trio. It will be a live in-person event, also live-streamed and recorded for future purposes.

Most of us vividly remember the electrifying performance of young Black poet Amanda Gorman at the 2020 Inauguration. Here are a few of her powerful lines from “The Hill We Climb”:

… being American is more than a pride we inherit,
It’s the past we step into
And how we repair it…
The new dawn blooms as we free it
For there is always light,
If only we’re brave enough to see it –
If only we’re brave enough to be it.
