Earth Day Intergenerational Event with Dr. John B. Cobb Jr. and Dr. Ramanathan; Reunion of Science and Religion

Please join us Earth day weekend on Saturday, April 21st, at First UU Church of SD in Hillcrest for a day with Scripps climate scientist Dr. Ramanathan, and theologian Dr. John Cobb Jr who will dialogue together in the afternoon. Young people are particularly welcome. The program includes interactive music with the MLK community choir, giant rod puppets, and theatrical story of climate crisis — but hopes & dreams of how we are creating solutions for the world we share!

Veerabhadran Ramanathan, eminent climate scientist and advisor to Pope Francis, and the Rev. John Cobb Jr., environmentalist, author, and renowned theologian, will speak about uniting people throughout the world to help save the Earth from environmental catastrophe.

Ramanathan is a distinguished professor at Scripps Institute of Oceanography at University of California  San Diego and UNESCO Professor of Climate and Policy TERI University, New Delhi, India. In 1975, Ramanathan discovered the greenhouse effect of halocarbons. He works to bring scientists, religious leaders and policy makers together to avoid the consequences of unsustainable actions.

Cobb is a scholar in the field of process philosophy and process theology. He is the author of more than 50 books and is described as one of the most significant theologians of the past century. His is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has been a major influence in the ecologic movement in China. In 2015 at age 90, he was the architect of a major world conference with Claremont School of Theology, “Seizing and Alternative: Toward an Ecologic Civilization.”

The speakers, in association with the work of Pope Francis, are a monumental force in helping to unite science and religion in the service of humanity and all of creation.

The Sikh community has generously donated an Indian vegetarian dinner, representing “the equality and oneness of all humankind.”  Before dinner, Earth Justice organizations will be available for a popcorn reception with live music.

People of all faiths and ages are welcome. The program includes interactive music with the Martin Luther King community choir, giant rod puppets, and ritual.  Young people from many faith communities are making hand puppets for the event.
